Following Is Not a Formula!

Instead of trying to manufacture a miracle by finding specific objects, gifts, and talents to give to God, surrender everything you have and give it to God (since it all belongs to Him anyway). Then wait for Him, in His time, to direct you in the way He deems best. The point is to allow Him to be in control and not to try to take His rightful place of leadership.

Every ministry or vocation is going to look and function differently. God loves to bless a nearly infinite diversity within His unity. Following God is not a “paint-by-numbers” kit, where you follow a cleverly defined formula for success. It is a process of listening, learning, and patiently following, sometimes in almost complete blindness as you cling to the Almighty hand. Those who want the Christian life to be easy and predictable will find themselves frequently frustrated. God is looking for followers. Jesus didn’t give His disciples a ten-year plan. He just woke them every day and said, “Follow Me.”

Just as God didn’t use the same methods for provision and deliverance with His people in the Bible, so He doesn’t use predictable methods with us in our day. The constant is that it is God who leads, God who provides, and God who delivers. The rest is a walk of faith. All I can do in this context is to show you the boxtop, but I can’t put all the pieces together for your unique situation.

Your Assignment, Should You Choose to Accept It

When God calls you to a task, He always provides the means for you to be able to accomplish it. Hudson Taylor once said, “The Lord’s work, done in the Lord’s way will never fail to have the Lord’s provision.”2

Oftentimes, as a leader (whether in the home, church, business, or society), you may feel that you have been left to do something that is beyond your ability. That may be true! You might be in over your head. Perhaps you can’t raise your children effectively. Perhaps you can’t disciple the people God has sent your way. Perhaps you can’t show kindness and compassion to the people you are called to lead. However, God can, and He will do His work, His way, through you! That is the unique work and call of the Holy Spirit, to empower us to be able to do what we cannot on our own. Are you willing to let go of whatever is in your hand and surrender it to God and let Him breathe life into it?
